Samsung Galaxy SIII Android 4.1 Update Begins In October

Samsung’s new flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S3, is selling like hotcakes in every region it’s been released in. Reviewers have also been kind to the the device. All this despite Samsung shipping the phone without the newest version of Android, 4.1 Jelly Bean. Well, those yearning for the update won’t have too much longer to wait. Samsung has confirmed that Jelly Bean will start appearing in October for some variants of the device.

The updates next month are expected to target the international Galaxy S3 $249.99 at Amazon Wireless , which is sold in most European countries. This phone comes with a quad-core Exynos processor and 3G HSPA+ data. The US variants are all based on a dual-core Snapdragon S4 and have 4G LTE, even if the network doesn’t yet support it. Samsung would not comment on updates for carrier-specific models or on what part of October the first updates would roll out.

Android 4.1 brings a number of important improvements over 4.0, including Google Now. This is a fascinating predictive search service that pulls up relevant information on a number of cards based on location and time. Jelly Bean also implements new UI processing known as “Project Butter” to speed things up. Additionally, Android 4.1 includes refinements to notifications and the keyboard.

Samsung has been slow to roll out updates in the past, but this isn’t bad when viewed in context. There are plenty of flagship devices, like HTC’s One series, with no scheduled 4.1 updates. Galaxy S3 users in the US should expect to wait a few weeks — or months — to get the update certified by US carriers.
